I have installed I-doit; and now the question is how to fill it? I could enter items one-by-one but that is tedious. So I am looking for ways to "automatically" fill the database. We have a spreadsheet with items - any tips on how to export that? Or does anyone have a script that does a discovery on the network and dump the results into the I-doit database? We have Debian servers and Ubuntu desktops.

You can use OCS Inventory, but you'll have to install (or at least execute) a service on the machines you want to record. You can then connect to the OCS-DB by using the i-doit OCS Module (you can find this under "Import" in the main navigation).
